System Requirements and Installation Information for Windows Server 2012 R2:
1 . Installation is the basic concept of getting the new operating system on your hardware. Specifically, a clean installation requires deleting the previous operating system.
2 . Upgrade means moving from your existing operating system to Windows Server 2012 R2, while staying on the same hardware. You can upgrade from an evaluation version of Windows Server 2012 R2, a current retail version of certain editions of Windows Server 2012 R2 (an action known as “license conversion”), a previous retail version of certain editions of Windows Server, or from a volume-licensed edition of Windows Server 2012 R2. Even while staying on the same hardware, some server roles might require specific steps to ensure a smooth upgrade. For detailed information about upgrading by any of these methods to Windows Server 2012 R2, see upgrade options
3 . Migration means moving from your existing operating system to Windows Server 2012 R2 by transferring to a different set of hardware. Migration, which might vary considerably depending on the server roles you have installed, is discussed in detail athttp://technet.microsoft.com/windowsserver/dn458795.
Installing versions distributed as VHDs
In addition to the other distribution channels, Windows Server 2012 R2 is also available as a pre-configured virtual hard disk (VHD) file, which you can obtain from the TechNet Evaluation Center (http://technet.microsoft.com/evalcenter/dn205286.aspx). VHD files are available with Windows Server 2012 R2 pre-configured in either Server Core mode or Server with a GUI mode (though you can switch modes after installation at will). The resulting virtual machine has the following characteristics:
2 GB RAM
80 GB hard drive
To use the VHD distribution, you must have a computer running Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, or Windows Server 2012 R2. The Hyper-V server role must be installed.
To install the VHD
1 . Download the VHD file to a convenient location. A common location is C:UsersPublicDocumentsHyper-VVirtual hard disks, but any location you prefer will work.
2 . Start Hyper-V Manager. On the Action menu, point to New, and then point to Virtual Machine.
3 . Complete the New Virtual Machine wizard, and on the Connect Virtual Hard Disk page, choose Attach a virtual hard disk later.
4 . After completing the New Virtual Machine wizard, check Hyper-V Manager to verify that the virtual machine was successfully created.
5 . Right-click the new virtual machine and point to Settings. In the left pane, click IDE Controller 0. In the right pane, point to Hard Drive, and then Add. In the menu that opens, click Virtual Hard Disk and point to Browse.... Navigate to the location of the VHD you downloaded, select that file, and then click OK.
6 . Configure the network adapter for the resulting virtual machine: right-click the virtual machine and select Settings. In the left pane, clickNetwork Adapter. In the menu that appears, select one of the network adapters of the virtualization server, and then click OK.
7 . Start the virtual machine.
Features removed from Windows Server 2012 R2:
Backup and file recovery
1. The File Backup and Restore feature has been removed. Use the File History feature instead.
2 . System Image Backup (the “Windows 7 File Recovery” feature) has been removed. Instead, use “Reset your PC.”
Drivers for tape drives have been removed from the operating system. Instead, use the drivers provided by the manufacturer of your tape drive.
Recovery disk creation
The ability to create a recovery disk on CD or DVD has been removed. Use the Recovery Disk to USB feature.
The /stao (sets token activation only) and /ctao (clears activation tokens only) options of Slmgr.vbs have been removed. These options have been replaced by more flexible activation command options.
Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications
The Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) has been removed. If you use the SUA POSIX subsystem with this release, use Hyper-V to virtualize the server. If you use the tools provided by SUA, switch to Cygwin's POSIX emulation, or use either mingw-w64 (available from Sourceforge.net) or MinGW (available from MinGW.org) for doing a native port.
WMI rootvirtualization namespace v1 (used in Hyper-V)
The WMI rootvirtualizationv1 namespace has been removed. Instead use the rootvirtualizationv2 namespace.
Windows Server 2012 Editions
Datacenter edition is ideal for customers who want to have a highly virtualized private and hybrid cloud environment. As always, it provides access to all the product features and enables unlimited instances of Windows Server with each license, enabling your virtual environment to grow as you do. The licensing for Datacenter edition will continue to be processor plus CAL (Client Access License), with each license covering up to two physical processors on a single server.
Standard edition is ideal for those customers who want to have a physical or lightly virtualized environment. This edition enables you to run up to two virtual instances of Windows Server with each license and provides all the same features as Datacenter edition. The licensing for Standard edition will continue to be processor plus CAL, with each license covering up to two physical processors on a single server, just like Datacenter edition.
Essentials edition is ideal for small businesses that have up to 25 users and want to have a simpler, pre-configured connection to cloud-based services. This edition enables you to run a single virtual instance of Essentials. The licensing for Essentials will continue to be a server license for a two processor server that does not require CALs.
Foundation edition is ideal for small businesses that have up to 15 users and want a general purpose server. The licensing for Foundation has not changed; it continues to be a server license for a one-processor server that does not require CALs and is sold only through OEM (original equipment manufacturer).
Run up to four Virtual Machines on up to four processors
1 . Essentials Experience - New: Windows Server Essentials Experience (WSEE)
2 . The Essentials Graphical User Interface is a role in Windows Server Standard 2012 R2
3 . Work Folders - Synchronize and protect critical data with "Work Folders", a new feature that facilitates the BYOD (bring-your-own-device) trend by enabling users to access work files from their personal computers and devices. Organizations retain centralized control over that data and can specify device policies such as encryption and lock screen password.
4 . Data Deduplication; finding and removing duplication within data without compromising its fidelity or integrity
5 . Hyper-V Replica - Affordable disaster recovery, included in Windows Server 2012, makes an initial replica of virtual machines and then replicates any changes.
6 . Easily move workloads to new servers with no downtime
7 . Flexible, scalable storage; A cost-effective way to get the storage your business requires
8 . Centralized backup and remote access
9 . Networked file and print sharing
10 . Centralized storage and security of files
11 . Mobile user access to company data
12 . Windows Server 2012 Standard is for minimally virtualized environments.
13 . Every user or device accessing the server OS requires a CAL (Client Access License)
14 . One of the most comprehensive solution platforms for SMB
15 . Ideal solution for small businesses with multiple types of clients (laptops / devices / desktops / tablets) and remote end users. Users that require secure access to shared information, centralized file sharing, print services, and require remote access to company data from anywhere on any device.
